Published in 1779, this drill manual was written by Inspector General Friedrich Von Steuben as a method of standardizing best rules and practices for the Continental Army in the early days of the American Revolution. Von Steuben, a Prussian military officer, made a name for himself as a lieutenant in the Seven Years' War and later as a personal aide to Frederick the Great. By the mid-1770s, Von Steuben had been discharged from the Prussian army and was in Paris seeking employment.
